4th Grade Visits Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge
On Oct. 16 the McGregor 4th graders had the opportunity to visit the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge. There we met with Walt Ford, the refuge manager, and he took us to Rice lake where the kids were able to see and learn about how air boats work and how they use them to count the fall migration of waterfowl. Then we went up on the observation deck and watched as the boat went around the lake, chasing up ducks, geese and swans. When they were done we returned to the refuge office where Walt had mounted ducks of different species for the kids to see. He explained how to help identify ducks and how to tell the males and females apart.
